Throughout 2010 HPM Media Ltd. will be touring mainland Britain, as part of an ongoing project to visit schools and encourage children away from their consoles and back to books, (even if only for a short while.)

Leighroy Marsh visited our school to read his new book, ‘The Hairy Plug Monster’ and it was a fantastic experience for the children and staff (not to mention Leighroy himself!). The initial plan was for Leighroy to read to KS1 children but he ended up visiting all the classes from Year Reception to Year 6 and every single pupil loved the story. The reading was followed by a question and answer session and each class asked really good questions. Classes went away and were able to produce quality creative writing which Leighroy took the time to read and evaluate for them. Leighroy’s visit will hopefully be the first of many. We can’t wait for his next book to be published. A fine writer of children’s literature indeed. The children have never stopped talking about him since he left!

Leighroy Marsh visited our school in February, reading his work to the infant and junior children in two separate sessions.
Leighroy’s first published book ‘The Hairy Plug Monster’ went down well with children of all ages. Leighroy explained how the poem evolved form one of the many questions our own children ask about everyday phenomena – in this case the gurgle of the bathwater as it disappears down the plughole. The story is written in simple rhyming verse, evocative of The Gruffalo, and contains many of the elements of popular children’s picture book fiction – fear of the unknown, adventure and burping. The narrative is well matched to the illustrations, producing an engaging first book.
Leighroy shared unpublished work with the children, and showed his enthusiasm for writing children’s fiction through a question and answer session that dealt with a range of questions with humour and sincerity. We were delighted to have Leighroy visit us and look forward to following his career.
